How to monitor competitor app listing copy and screenshot changes

Save a rival’s public listing as a baseline, compare copy edits and screenshot galleries, and build a dated history without checking every store page by hand.

A competitor’s new first screenshot or rewritten title can be useful context for your next listing update. The difficult part is knowing what changed without reopening every store page and trying to remember last week’s wording. A saved baseline turns that memory task into a comparison.

Add a rival to your app’s Competitors tab

  1. Sign in as a workspace owner or admin, open your app, and select Competitors.
  2. For iOS, enter the rival’s reverse-DNS bundle ID. This is different from its numeric App Store ID.
  3. For Android, enter the package name, which is the id= value in its Google Play URL.
  4. Select Track competitor. The first successful public-store read becomes the baseline for future observations.

The rival uses the same platform as the parent app. You do not need access to its developer account, and no organization store credentials are sent to read its public listing. All workspace members can view the saved reports.

Read the before-and-after report

Later successful checks compare the public app name, description, Google Play short description, and screenshot gallery against the previous successful snapshot. Copy edits are shown side by side. Screenshot reports show additions, removals, and reordering so you can inspect the observed gallery before and after.

The report’s timestamp means we detected the change at this check. It is not the competitor’s publication timestamp. If a rival changes a listing and restores it between observations, that intermediate version may never be seen.

Understand the storefront coverage

The monitor covers public US storefronts. Google Play is requested in English; Apple’s text follows its public lookup response. App Store screenshot coverage is the iPhone gallery returned by that API. Private keywords, subtitles, and promotional text are not exposed by the lookup endpoint.

Screenshot monitoring compares URLs and order, not pixels. Delivery-size transformations and query changes are normalized so they do not look like a new creative. Replacing image bytes at the same URL is not detected. Historical images are linked from store CDNs and may eventually become unavailable, even though the saved text and URLs remain in the report.

Choose the allowance that fits your research

  • Free/Basic, including trial: 1 active competitor per app.
  • Team: up to 5 active competitors per app.
  • Enterprise: discuss requirements and limits with sales.

If a workspace is above its current allowance, the oldest tracked competitors remain active and the extras pause. Their previous reports stay available. Remove an earlier rival or upgrade to resume another one. Compare the current plans.

Manual checks and scheduled observations

Owners and admins can choose Check now, once per minute per rival. The deployed worker schedules daily checks; automatic observations depend on that worker being configured. A failed store request records an error and preserves the last successful snapshot rather than inventing a removal.

The page shows the 50 most recent detected changes across an app’s competitors, plus each rival’s current snapshot and last successful check. Removing a competitor deletes its saved history, so keep the rivals you still want to reference.

Use observations to ask better questions

A changed title does not prove a ranking improvement, and a new screenshot does not tell you how an experiment performed. Use the report to identify what a rival is emphasizing, then decide whether your own listing accurately explains the benefits your app delivers. The goal is a clearer decision, not a claim that copying a rival’s changes will produce the same outcome.
